Syracuse, N.Y. – Nick Tavares '19 and open pair partner Luke Gadsdon won the U23 men's pair at the Canadian National Championships and placed fourth overall in the open pairs division.
"The National Rowing Championships went very well," said Tavares. "I was able to beat many Senior athletes who have been racing internationally for several years. This earned me an invite to the Olympic Camp Team which will allow me an opportunity to make an Olympic boat for Tokyo in 2020."
"Syracuse has been the biggest stepping stone for getting me this far," added Tavares. "The coaching staff and my teammates themselves have shaped me into an elite athlete, giving me the opportunity to reach my Olympic potential."
Following a second-place finish in the time trial, Tavares and Gadsdon won their quarterfinal clocking a time of 7:04.625. The duo was third in the semifinal and was fourth overall in the A-Final of the event.
"It is exciting for all of us to watch Nick pursue his Olympic ambitions," said Syracuse head coach Dave Reischman. "Syracuse rowing has had an alum participate at every Olympic Games since 1960 and I know Nick is keen to keep that streak alive. We wish him well!"
Tavares was a member of Syracuse's team that has placed in the top-10 at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Regatta in three-straight seasons including an eighth place finish his junior year and a ninth place finish in 2019.
