Berkeley, Calif. – Down but never out. Syracuse rallied from an early two-goal deficit, Charlotte de Vries tallied her first career hat trick and the Orange earned their fifth overtime victory of the season, 4-3, at Cal Friday night.
"We were able to regroup from a very aggressive Cal team," said head coach Ange Bradley. "I am proud of our team, we fought back and found a way. It was a total team effort today."
The Bears scored 28 seconds into the non-conference match and extended that lead to two goals in the fifth minute. De Vries tallied her first of three goals in the match in the 14th minute putting Syracuse on the board with a crafty goal in the upper 90 of the cage, the first of her career. Cal outshot the Orange 10-1 in the first quarter but the hot start cooled off in the second quarter. The Bears edged 'Cuse 3-0 in shots and neither team scored a goal.
Sarah Luby scored in the 31st minute, unassisted, to tie the game. It was Luby's first goal of her junior season. With under two minutes to play in the third quarter, de Vries gave the Orange the go-ahead goal on an Orange penalty corner.
Cal's leading scorer entering Friday's game, Katrina Carter, scored the equalizer in the 52nd minute. The 3-3 score held even through regulation and sent Syracuse to overtime for the second straight game.
De Vries scored in the 73rd minute delivering Syracuse's third win in double overtime in 2019. It was the freshman's team-leading 12th goal and her sixth game-winning goal this season.
The Orange outshot the Bears, 17-15, and goalkeeper Sarah Sinck made four saves. De Vries becomes the first player to tally three goals in a game since Carolin Hoffmann against Pacific in 2017. It was the second four-goal game of the season for the Orange (Vermont 8/30).
Syracuse returns to action Saturday, Oct. 5, against No. 16 Stanford in Berkeley, Calif. Game time is set for 5 p.m. ET.
