DURHAM, N.C. – Syracuse had its two-game unbeaten streak snapped in a 4-0 setback at No. 18 Duke on Friday night. The match was the Orange's fifth against a ranked opponent this season.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Duke (6-3-1, 2-2-0) took the lead in the 33rd minute when Ian Murphy scored on assists from Daniele Proch and Brandon Williamson. Syracuse (3-3-4, 0-2-2) continued to create scoring chances as it outshot the Blue Devils, 10-9, and had six corner kicks to three for the Blue Devils in the first half. Sophomore Ryan Raposo hit the post with his shot in the 30th minute and junior Sondre Norheim just missed the net with a header off a corner kick in the 42nd minute.
Â
The Blue Devils added to their advantage in the 47th minute on a goal by Proch. Duke added tallies in the 72nd minute and in the final minute of play to record the 4-0 victory.
Â
The Orange outshot the Blue Devils, 19-16, and earned 11 corner kicks to six for Duke. Sophomore Christian Miesch finished with four saves for the 'Cuse.
Â
"If you just looked at the score you would think we were on the wrong end of a good beating," Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre said. "But goals change games and that second goal was difficult for us. I thought we played some of our best soccer of the year in the first half and probably should have had a couple of goals at halftime. But when you don't take those chances you get punished and we were punished. The last two goals came as we were chasing the game and throwing numbers forward. But it was a tough one. We have to get back together and get ready for next week."
Â
UP NEXT
Syracuse returns to North Carolina to take on the No. 20 Tar Heels on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. The match will be televised on the ACC Network.
