RIT Takes Series Opener, 7-4, at Tennity

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The game went down to the wire but in the end Syracuse couldn't get it done as RIT outscored the Orange, 7-4, in the conference opener at Tennity Ice Pavilion. Freshman Mae Batherson netted her first career goal in the loss, with Syracuse's other goals coming from senior Savannah Rennie and juniors Jessica DiGirolamo, and Victoria Klimek. The Orange came back from a 3-1 deficit to lead, 4-3, a minute into the third, but two quick back-to-back goals and a pair of empty netters sealed Syracuse's fate. 'Cuse closes out the series on the road Saturday at noon.
"RIT outworked us, and fundamentally they were that much better," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "As the game went on they outworked us by using their bodies and doing little hockey plays. We have to bear down from here."
Â
How It Happened
The Orange came out firing in the first period, out-shooting RIT 14-3. Their efforts paid off nine minutes in when DiGirolamo netted her fourth of the year, putting 'Cuse up 1-0.
Â
The second period of play proved to be all offense as RIT answered with three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead before the period was halfway over. Klimek and Rennie scored in the 13th and 16th minutes, respectively, to tie the game at 3-3 and set up an exciting final frame. Klimek's goal was her first of the season and the 13th of her career.
Â
Batherson got things going less than a minute into the third period, blasting a laser from the blue line to put her side up 4-3. The lead looked as if it would hold for the Orange, but Tiger goals in the 14th, 16th, 18th and 19th minutes, the last two of which were empty netters, clinched the victory for RIT.Â

Up Next
Syracuse is back in action tomorrow afternoon in Rochester, N.Y. The Orange and Tigers close out their series at noon in Gene Polisseni Center.
