ROCHESTER, N.Y. - After a Friday night loss to RIT, Syracuse rallied Saturday afternoon and shut out the Tigers, 3-0, at Gene Polisseni Center to improve to 1-1 in College Hockey America (CHA) play. The Orange celebrated freshman Mae Batherson scoring her second consecutive goal, along with senior Kelli Rowswell adding the 18th of her career, and junior Emma Polaski netting her 19th. Senior Ady Cohen followed her 5-0 shutout of Union on Tuesday with another clean sheet Saturday, the third of her career.
"It was a very good response today from our team," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "Everyone played determined from start to finish."
How It Happened
The Orange came to play Saturday, opening up the first period with a flurry of shots heading RIT goalkeeper Jessi O'Leary's way. Syracuse outshot the competition 32-6 in the opening frame and got on the power play twice.
The second period was all Syracuse. Batherson got things going first, netting her second career goal, assisted by senior Savannah Rennie and junior Jessica DiGirolamo, halfway through the period to give the Orange a 1-0 lead. Rowswell made her presence known five minutes later as she found the back of the net for the fourth time on the season to put Syracuse up 2-0.
Polaski put a stamp on the day in the final four minutes of the third, lighting the lamp on an empty netter and giving 'Cuse its third of the day. For her part, Cohen recorded 12 saves in the win.
The game proved to be a total team effort for Syracuse, the Orange squad outshooting the competition 74-24, with 45 of those chances on goal.Â
