SYRACUSE, N.Y – Syracuse (3-1) defeated Cornell (1-4) in the "Battle of the Boeheim's," 72-53 on Wednesday night in the Carrier Dome. Orange coach Jim Boeheim benefited from Buddy Boeheim's 16 points in overcoming the game-high 25 points Cornell received from Jimmy Boeheim.
It was the 125th meeting between the schools and the Orange emerged with their 40th straight win against their Central New York neighbors.
Elijah Hughes' 22 points, 15 of which came in the second half, paced the Orange.
TIGHT FIRST 20
After Cornell senior Thurston McCarty's 3-pointer to open the scoring, Syracuse grabbed the next 10 points and eventually took a 16-9 lead. The Orange converted four-of-seven 3-balls in that span, including two from Buddy Boeheim. Hughes added five points of his own in the early going.
Four Big Red steals helped them get back within three points after the slow start. 'Cuse held a 22-19 advantage with 6:48 remaining in the first half.
Shots were not falling for either side as the half went on, as Cornell outscored the Orange 16-10 in 14:29 before the break. Syracuse went to the locker room with a 26-25 lead, behind Buddy Boeheim's 10 points.
KEEPING IT CLOSE
The Syracuse offense picked up to start the second half. Marek Dolezaj made three baskets in the first six minutes to help push the Syracuse lead to six with 14:43 to go in regulation. Joseph Girard III's second 3-ball of the game extended the advantage to nine, prompting Cornell to use a timeout with just over 13 minutes remaining. The Orange took control of the glass, outrebounding the Big Red, 8-4, in the first eight minutes after halftime.
The scoring fell nearly silent once again and Cornell outscored the Orange 6-3 to trim the Syraucse lead to 47-41. Quincy Guerrier gave his team an 11-point advantage with a make from behind the arc, and three made free throws from Girard followed by a Hughes fast break layup gave Syracuse a 57-44 cushion.
BOEHEIM AND HUGHES BRING IT HOME
Ahead 57-46, Hughes banged home a 3-pointer before Boeheim swished one of his own on the next possession, putting the Orange up by 14 points with 2:46 left in the game. Both buckets gave each player 16 points for the contest. Hughes knocked down another 3-point strike, increasing the lead to 15 with a minute and a half to play and sealing the third straight Syracuse victory.
