SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse University punter Sterling Hofrichter is the fourth outgoing Orange senior to accept a postseason all-star game invitation. Hofrichter has agreed to play in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, joining classmates Alton Robinson, Kendall Coleman and Lakiem Williams on this year's all-star circuit.
Â
The 2020 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl will be held on Jan. 18 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. Former Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis (National) and former Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson (American) will coach the two teams.
Â
Founded by the NFL Players Association, the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl has been played each year since 2012. Hofrichter will be the seventh Orange standout to take part in the exhibition and first since Prince-Tyson Gulley and Cameron Lynch in 2015.
Â
A three-year team captain, Hofrichter kicked 69 times in 2019 and currently ranks third nationally in net punting average (43.03). He leads the ACC with 29 punts downed inside the 20-yard line and he booted 22 balls that traveled at least 50 yards. Only 14.5 percent (10) of Hofrichter's punts this season were returned for a total of 17 yards, the fewest opponent punt return yards allowed in school history.
Â
In 49 career games for the Orange from 2016-19, Hofrichter punted 270 times for a team-record 11,651 yards.
Â
One of the three finalists for the 2019 Ray Guy Award as the nation's top punter, Hofrichter recently earned All-ACC First Team honors from both the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Associated Press. Additionally, he's been voted a first-team All-American by Pro Football Focus and Bleacher Report, and a second-team All-American by USA Today.
