
Orange Close Out Non-Conference Play Sunday vs. #22 West Virginia

Syracuse looks to extend its win streak on Sunday, Dec. 22 at 1:30 p.m. when the Orange face their second top-25 opponent in as many games. The Orange meet former BIG EAST rival #22 West Virginia (8-1) in the championship game of the Florida Sunshine Classic. Syracuse earned a 77-63 win over #19 Michigan State on Friday afternoon, collecting its first win against a ranked opponent this season. The Orange were led by senior Gabrielle Cooper who tallied a season-high 19 points. Kiara Lewis added 18 points while redshirt sophomore Maeva Djaldi-Tabdi had 16 points in 15 minutes. Emily Engstler, who leads the nation in defensive rebounds per game, tallied a career-high 17 boards adding 13 points, five assists and two blocks in the win.Â
West Virginia is 8-1 this season and rides a four-game win streak into Sunday's game. WVU beat #19 Michigan State 63-57 on Saturday afternoon. The Mountaineers earned a 71-65 win at Mississippi State on Dec. 8 in the Big 12/SEC Challenge. WVU's only loss of the season was in the first game of the Cancun Challenge where Creighton earned a seven-point win, 82-75. Kysre Gondrezick leads West Virginia with 16.4 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. Tynice Martin also averages double figures in scoring with 13.6 points per game and has a team-best .864 free throw shooting percentage.Â
The Orange and Mountaineers meet for the 24th time in program history on Sunday. West Virginia leads the series 14-9 but the series is tied 1-1 on a neutral court. The old BIG EAST rivals haven't played since Syracuse's final year in their old league, when West Virginia earned a 63-48 win in the BIG EAST Tournament on March 3, 2012.Â
The Florida Sunshine Classic is a three-team round robin that each team will play the other two during the Dec. 20-22 weekend. The Orange have played in the annual showcase twice before, going 1-3 in four games.Â
