SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 10 Syracuse women's tennis team (4-1, 0-1 ACC) could not keep its winning streak alive in its first conference game of the season. The Orange lost 4-3 at the hands of No. 19 Virginia (5-1, 1-0 ACC) Friday afternoon at Drumlins Country Club.
A second-set tiebreaker in the singles match between No. 43 Gabriela Knutson and Virginia's No. 32 Meghan Kelley on court one fell in favor of the Cavaliers, giving Kelley the two-set victory over Knutson and clinching the dual win for Virginia.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Orange dropped the doubles point, 2-0, to begin the dual. Knutson and Miranda Ramirez lost, 2-6, while Dina Hegab and Guzal Yusupova lost, 1-6. The set between No. 24 Sofya Golubovskaya and Sofya Treshcheva and Virginia's pair of Vivian Glozman and Sofia Munera would be left unfinished.
Syracuse regained momentum in singles play. Ramirez finished her singles match first, dominating Virginia's Chloe Gullickson. After taking the first set 6-2, Ramirez carried that momentum into the second set and won 6-2 once again.
Tied at one, Virginia jumped back in front after Hegab lost her first match of the season. The senior from Giza, Egypt, lost in straight sets, 3-6, 0-6.
Treshcheva, meanwhile, lost in straight sets, as well. Virginia extended its lead to 3-1 and looked to be on the verge of a convincing win.
Yusupova was up to the challenge, however. She knocked off Virginia's Amber O'Dell in a three-set thriller to keep Syracuse alive.
While Knutson's loss clinched the match for Virginia, Golubovskaya would not be deterred. After winning the second set to force the decisive third, Golubovskaya went back-and-forth with Vivian Glozman before earning her fourth singles victory of the year.
WHAT LIES AHEAD
The Orange are back in action this Sunday at Boston College. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
