SEATTLE - The No.10 Syracuse women's tennis team closed out its first-ever trip to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship with a 5-2 loss to No. 16 Ohio State Sunday evening. The loss moved Syracuse's record to 4-4 overall this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Orange fell into an early deficit after their struggles in doubles continued. Senior Gabriela Knutson and junior Miranda Ramirez, Syracuse's top duo, picked up a win (6-4) on court one to start things off, but Ohio State claimed the doubles point with wins on courts two and three.
Â
Sophomore Sofya Golubovskaya and senior Maria Tritou lost 6-2 on court two, while junior Guzal Yusupova and senior Dina Heagab were clipped 7-5 on court three.
Â
Down 1-0, the Orange regained life thanks to Knutson. She was first to complete her singles match, defeating Ohio State's Isabelle Boulais in straight sets (6-4, 6-1) to even the dual at one.
From there, however, it was all Buckeyes. Ohio State earned match wins on courts two, three, four and six, picking up the three more wins, as well as a fourth, it needed to seal the match victory. Ramirez, Hegab and senior Libi Mesh each lost in straight sets against their respective opponents.
Sophomore Sofya Golubovskaya was forced to retire in the middle of the third set.
Yusupova shined on court five, though. She defeated Ohio State's Danielle Wolf in straight sets (6-2, 6-3), which gave the Orange their second point of the dual.Â
OF NOTE
Sunday marks the fifth straight dual in which Syracuse has dropped the doubles point. The Orange have lost four of those five duals.
WHAT LIES AHEAD
The Orange are headed home for two duals at Drumlins Country Club. Syracuse plays Colorado at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15 before hosting Harvard at 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 17.
