RALEIGH, N.C. – Despite a season-high 21 points from senior Frank Howard, NC State (18-7, 6-6 ACC) came out on top against Syracuse (17-8, 8-4 ACC) Wednesday night in Raleigh, 73-58. The Wolfpack used a 24-of-49 (49 percent) shooting performance to defeat the Orange.
Howard shot 8-of-16 from the floor, including tying a career-high five 3-pointers, to match a game-best 21 points. Marek Dolezaj joined Howard in double-digits, contributing 10 of his own. Bourama Sidibe led Syracuse with six rebounds.
Braxton Beverley had a dominant performance for the Wolfpack with 21 points on 4-of-8 from 3-point range and 9-of-9 at the free throw life. He also tacked on four assists while Wyatt Walker led the team with nine.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite Sidibe opening the second half with a dunk for the Orange, NC State quickly took control of the ball game with an 18-3 run and a 51-37 lead. Beverley had six points in 42 seconds thanks to three free throws and his fourth 3-pointer of the night. The Wolfpack held 'Cuse scoreless for over four minutes and 3-of-11 shooting to open the half. NC State showed no signs of slowing down, finishing the half 14-of-22. Seven unanswered Orange points pulled them within 11, 61-50, but Syracuse couldn't close the gap any further.
FREE THROWS RUN THE FIRST HALF
Both teams had significant runs in the first half, fueled by free throws. NC State and Syracuse both connected on seven free throws. The Wolfpack had five in a four-minute span that spurred a 14-3 run giving them a 28-16 lead. The Orange responded with 11 unanswered points, led by four free throws of their own. Syracuse's run pulled them within one, 28-27, before NC State ended the half with two free throws. The pair of shots gave the Wolfpack a three-point, 30-27, lead going into half time.

OF NOTE
- With his seven points tonight, Battle has 1,536 career points. He needs two more to surpass Adrian Autry and move into the top-20 all-time at Syracuse.
- Brissett, who had three-consecutive double-doubles, was held to just two points and five rebounds against the Wolfpack.
- NC State had 19 assists on 24 field goals
- Syracuse moved to 7-5 in the all-time series as NC State won its first game at home against the Orange. The Wolfpack win also marked the second-straight including last year's, 74-70, victory at the Carrier Dome.
- The loss is Syracuse's second this season in true road games, moving them to 5-2.
- The Wolfpack did not make a field goal in the final 4:33 of the first half allowing 'Cuse to close the gap to three.
- Despite NC State entering the night ranked second in the ACC in offensive rebounds, Syracuse won the offensive battle of the boards 11-7.
- Syracuse continued its stretch of forcing 10 or more turnovers from its opponent. The stretch dates back 25 games. The last game where the Orange did not force 10 or more was at TCU March 18, 2018 where the Horned Frogs had seven.
