DURHAM, N.C. – Back-to-back two run innings for Indiana (9-0) was enough to help them top Syracuse (2-6), 5-1, Sunday morning in the final game of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
Freshman Peyton Schnackenberg pitched a steady 4.2 innings in her first career start for the Orange. Schnackenberg allowed three runs on five hits with one strikeout and one walk allowed. Sophie Dandola came in for the final 2.1 innings of relief, allowing two runs on two hits with two strikeouts.
Alicia Hansen scored Syracuse's lone run of the day in the third inning after reaching base on a bunt single. She advanced to second with her third stolen base of the season before reaching third on Bryce Holmgren's single. An error from Indiana's left fielder on the same play allowed Hansen to safely reach home.
Hansen, who ended the day 2-of-4, had her second-straight multi-hit game, and her third in the last four. Her double also gives her sole possession of seventh all-time at Syracuse with 29 in her career.
The Hoosiers relied on their bullpen to get through the game utilizing three pitchers, none of whom threw more than three innings.
Indiana struck first in the second inning with a leadoff double from Annika Baez. Maddie Westmoreland drew a hit by pitch before a sac bunt successfully advanced both runners. Makayla Ferrari hit an RBI single, scoring Baez, before the Orange were able to limit the damage by retiring the next two batters.
After Syracuse tied things up, Indiana put its lead runner on base in the top of the fifth, beating out Gabby Teran's throw from second. The base runner was called out one pitch later for leaving early on attempted stolen base. It didn't matter for the Hoosiers as Camryn Woodall and Katie Lacefield hit back-to-back homeruns, taking the lead for good at 3-1.
The Orange was able to piece together back-to-back walks with two outs in the fifth, but could not plate a run. Indiana tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth with consecutive hits from Westmoreland and Grayson Radcliffe.
Syracuse travels to Gainesville, Fla. next weekend for the Bubly Invitational. The Orange will be tested against #4 Florida, Illinois State and Florida A&M.
