SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange enter their final home series of the year this weekend when they faces College Hockey America opponent Lindenwood for two games over the weekend at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
The first game is set for 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22. The Syracuse women's hockey team will don commemorative jerseys in honor of Sherry Goodnough, who recently passed away after battling pancreatic cancer. Sherry, mother of former Orange student-athlete Kaillie Goodnough ('15), was a passionate Orange supporter and a devoted hockey mom.
Puck drop for the final home game of the season is at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23. A brief ceremony recognizing the senior class will take place prior to the game.
WHAT'S NEW WITH THE ORANGE
Syracuse sits in third place in the CHA standings with an 8-19-3 overall record, including a 8-6-2 mark in conference play. The Orange are 2-1-1 in their last four games, most recently coming off a 1-1 overtime tie with RIT on Feb. 16.
The Orange peppered the Tigers with 83 shots across their two-game series one weekend ago, but Syracuse was only able to score once. Junior goaltender Ady Cohen made 25 saves on 26 shots in the Orange's 1-0 loss Friday, Feb. 15.
Syracuse got on the board first on Saturday, after junior forward Kelli Rowswell corralled a loose puck and put it past RIT goaltender Terra Lanteigne in the first period. The goal, which was Rowswell's second of the year, gave the Orange an early advantage, but RIT was quick to respond, scoring three minutes later.
THE ORANGE WEAR PURPLE
The commemorative uniforms display Syracuse in purple script across the jersey's chest with a purple ribbon – the symbol for pancreatic cancer awareness – included beneath. "Dig Deep" – a mantra that Sherry often used as a form of encouragement and motivation – is written on each jersey's nameplate.
Fan can bid to take home these jerseys during an auction, with proceeds benefiting SUNY Upstate Medical University's Upstate Cancer Center. All money raised is donated in honor and support of Sherry and her family.
HONORING THE SENIORS
Syracuse will recognize the careers of five student-athletes before the game Saturday. Forward Brooke Avery, defenseman Dakota Derrer, defenseman Allie Munroe, forward Sarah Stuehr and goaltender Maddi Welch will be honored for their contributions to the hockey program.
The Orange will also recognize Michael Kuruc, a senior who serves as the team's video coordinator.Â
SCOUTING THE LIONS
Lindenwood comes to Tennity holding a 7-18-3 overall record and a 3-11-2 mark in conference play. The Lions had a successful weekend against conference leader Robert Morris, tying the Colonials, 2-2, last Friday before picking up a dominant 6-1 victory Saturday.
Forward Nicole Guagliardo leads the Lions with 19 points on eight goals and 11 assists this season. Forward Sierra Burt, who is right behind her with 15 points (7 goals, 8 assists), took home the conference's Player of the Week award after recording two goals and an assist in the weekend series against Robert Morris.Â
Forward Jada Burke, meanwhile, has 10 goals through 28 games - two of which came against Robert Morris last weekend. Her performance landed her CHA Rookie of the Week.
ABOUT THE SERIES
The Orange swept Lindenwood earlier this season in St. Charles. Syracuse prevailed in a thrilling 5-4 overtime win on Oct. 19 and responded with a convincing 6-3 win the following day.
Syracuse leads the all-time series with Lindenwood, 23-5-2.
WHAT LIES AHEAD
The Orange wrap up the regular season next weekend with two games against Robert Morris.
Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. Friday, March 1 in Moon Township, Penn. The two teams will complete the series at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 2.
