Orange's Season Ends in NCAA Tournament

MADISON, Wis. - The Syracuse women's hockey team's Cinderella story came to an end in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday afternoon.Â
The Orange lost 4-0 to top-seed Wisconsin (33-4-2) inside a sold-out LaBahn Arena, ending the team's fairytale run. Syracuse concludes the 2018-19 season with a 13-22-3 overall record, including a 10-8-2 mark in College Hockey America play and a 3-1 mark in postseason games.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Syracuse was not intimidated by the postseason atmosphere. The Orange, who earned their first-ever NCAA Tournament bid after claiming the program's first-ever conference title one weekend ago, kept pace with the country's top team at the start.
The Badgers fired 14 shots on net in the opening period, but Syracuse junior goaltender Ady Cohen did not budge. She made 14 saves in the first and kept the Orange in striking distance. Syracuse and Wisconsin entered the first intermission tied at zero.
Wisconsin's first breakthrough came three minutes into the second period, however. Annie Pankowski's first of two second-period goals gave the Badgers a lead that they would never lose.
Two more goals in the final 10 minutes of the third period padded Wisconsin's lead, eliminating any threat of an Orange comeback opportunity.
OF NOTE
After making 14 saves in the first period, Cohen logged 17 and 12 saves in the second and third periods, respectively. She finished the game with a career-high 43 saves.
Five different Orange skaters recorded multiple shots on net. Redshirt senior forward Brooke Avery and senior defenseman Allie Munroe each had two shots on goal in what was the final game of their collegiate careers.
