SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Orange kicked off their five-match homestand with a statement win.
The 32nd-ranked Syracuse women's tennis team overcame a 3-1 deficit to defeat No. 15 Florida State, 4-3, in the clash between Atlantic Coast Conference opponents Sunday afternoon inside Drumlins Country Club. The Orange improve to 11-6 overall, including a 4-4 mark in ACC play, with the victory, having won seven of their last nine dual matches.
HOW IT HAPPENED
A slow start put Syracuse in an early hole. The Orange were swept in doubles to begin the afternoon, losing all three matches.
The 71st-ranked duo of senior Gabriela Knutson and junior Miranda Ramirez lost 6-3 against Florida State's top pair of Emmanuelle Salas and Ana Oparenovic. The Seminoles clinched the doubles point when sophomore Sofya Golubovskaya and freshman Sofya Treshcheva lost 6-3 on court two.
Syracuse quickly responded to the adversity in singles play, though. Knutson, the 40th-ranked singles player in the nation, dismantled No. 26 Carla Touly in straight sets (6-4, 6-0) to even the match at one.
Florida State, however, fired back. Treshcheva lost in straight sets (6-4, 6-1) on court six before senior Libi Mesh lost 6-1, 6-2 on court four, putting the Seminoles ahead 3-1.
With their backs firmly against the wall, the Orange went to work.
Senior Dina Hegab picked up a straight-set victory (6-1, 6-4) on court five, and No. 90 Ramirez held off Florida State's Salas 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) on court two to tie the match at three.
All eyes turned to court three, where Golubovskaya and Florida State's Oparenovic were locked in a dogfight. Syracuse's sophomore lost the first set, but she responded with a 6-4 win in the second to force the decisive third set.
The two competitors exchanged blows until the very end. Golubovskaya fought off Oparenovic to win 7-5 in the third set, completing the comeback and clinching the dual victory for Syracuse.
NOTES
The win is the Orange's second of the season against a ranked opponent. Syracuse is 2-5 this year, defeating then-No. 9 Michigan earlier this season.
