SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The 28th-ranked Syracuse women's tennis team's upset bid came up short Sunday afternoon. The Orange lost 5-2 to No. 10 NC State, an Atlantic Coast Conference foe, inside Drumlins Country Club.Â
Syracuse is now 11-8 overall and 4-6 in ACC play this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Wolfpack wasted no time putting the Orange in an early hole.
NC State's Liz Norman and Bianca Moldovan rushed past Syracuse senior Dina Hegab and junior Guzal Yusupova, 6-3, before the Wolfpack's ninth-ranked doubles duo of Anna Rogers and Alana Smith clinched the point with a 6-4 win over No. 71 senior Gabriela Knutson and junior Miranda Ramirez. Sophomore Sofya Golubovskaya and freshman Sofya Treshcheva were deadlocked in a 4-4 battle when NC State took the point.
Syracuse would not hit its stride in singles play until late. Treshcheva, Golubovskaya and No. 40 Knutson each lost in straight sets to start the action, as NC State opened a 4-0 lead, clinching the dual victory in the process.
Knutson's loss came at the hands of the 31st-ranked singles competitor in the country, while Golubovskaya lost to the nation's 70th-ranked player.
It was not until No. 90 Ramirez won in straight sets (7-5, 6-2) over No. 116 Adriana Reami on court three that the Orange recorded their first point of the day. Yusupova followed suit shortly after, winning 6-2, 7-5 on court four to give Syracuse its second point.
NC State earned its fifth and final point of the day when Hegab lost 6-4, 6-2 on court six to close out the match.Â
