SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The 30th-ranked Syracuse women's tennis team defeated Pitt, 5-2, Friday afternoon inside Drumlins Country Club.
The victory over their Atlantic Coast Conference foe improved the Orange's overall record to 12-8. Syracuse is now 5-6 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Orange battled a slow start to begin the afternoon, as Pitt won the doubles point with victories on courts one and three. Syracuse's top duo of No. 90 senior Gabriela Knutson and junior Miranda Ramirez were first to lose, suffering a 6-2 defeat.
Senior Dina Hegab and junior Guzal Yusupova, meanwhile, could not hang with Pitt's No. 3 pair, losing by the score of 6-4 to give the Panthers the doubles point. Sophomore Sofya Golubovskaya and freshman Sofya Treshcheva picked up a 6-3 win, but Pitt had already clinched the point.
Down 1-0 entering singles play, the Orange brought a completely different energy. Syracuse won the first set on all six courts, retaking control of the match from the start.
The Orange would go on to win four straight singles matches, clinching the dual victory at 4-1. The first win came from senior Libi Mesh, who defeated her opponent in straight sets on court five.
Right after that, Golubovskaya earned her first win over a ranked opponent this season, as she moved past No. 125 Claudia Bartolome in straight sets to give Syracuse a 2-1 lead. No. 82 Ramirez and Hegab then both won in straight sets, giving the Orange their third and fourth points, respectively.
Syracuse's fifth point came from senior Maria Tritou, who won in three sets - 6-4, 5-7, 10-8 - on court four to seal the victory.
