SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Two historic trophies will be up for grabs when No. 9 Syracuse men's rowing goes head-to-head with No. 12 Cornell and No. 16 Navy Saturday in Princeton, N.J. The Goes Trophy is awarded to the winning varsity eight squad while the Stagg Trophy is presented to the team with the most overall points between the 1V8+, 2V8+ and 3V8+.
Racing begins at 3:30 p.m. with the 4V8+ and concludes when the varsity eights take the water in hopes of bringing The Goes Trophy home at 4:30 p.m. Races are scheduled on 20 minute increments.
In last year's meeting at Ten Eyck, the trophies were split as Cornell won the Goes Trophy while Syracuse kept the Stagg Trophy home in 'Cuse.
Syracuse last won the Goes Trophy in 2011 and has won it 11 times since its inception in 1955.
The Orange have won the Stagg Trophy seven times since they began racing for it in 1967. Syracuse hopes to claim it for back-to-back years for the first time since 1998-98.
Race Schedule
4V8+ 3:30 p.m.
3V8+ 3:50 p.m.
2V8+ 4:10 p.m.
1V8+ 4:30 p.m.
Originally scheduled for Saturday morning in Annapolis, Md., the time and location was changed earlier this week due to anticipated inclement weather in Annapolis.
About the Goes Trophy
Clifford "Tip" Goes, Syracuse Class of 1914, created the Goes Trophy in 1955 to honor coaches James Ten Eyck of Syracuse, Charles Courtney of Cornell and Richard Glendon of Navy. The trophy is presented to the winner of the annual race between the schools.
About the Stagg Trophy
Presented to the team compiling the most overall points in the heavyweight races between Navy, Cornell and Syracuse, the Stagg Trophy is named after Norman G. Stagg, the late Tompkins County judge and former Cornell oarsman. The trophy was first awarded in 1967.
