Syracuse Retains Kraus-Simmons Trophy

Desko wins 250th career game.
No. 13 Syracuse (6-3) and Hobart (8-2) played a classic back-and-forth battle for the Kraus-Simmons Trophy for about 20 minutes. But the Orange exploded for 12-straight goals to bury the Statesmen 17-5, and retain the trophy for the sixth-straight season.
After the game was knotted at five with 7:44 remaining before halftime, the Orange defense locked in, led by Drake Porter tying a career-high with 16 saves. The win marks 250 for Head Coach John Desko, who ranks 18th all-time in NCAA Division I victories. He now sits three behind Roy Simmons Sr. – the namesake of the Kraus-Simmons Trophy for second on Syracuse's list.
Hobart entered the game as the nation's second-highest scoring offense, but the Orange held them scoreless for the final 38 minutes of regulation to quell their potent offensive attack.
"It's never easy coming here," Desko said. "It's always been a bit of a neighborhood game. Syracuse and Hobart goes back many years and has always been very competitive, so it's always nice to get out of here with a W.
"We had struggled in first halves and I think we improved on that tonight. We got started a little bit slow, but we finished stronger in the second quarter. A lot of guys who've been working very hard but hadn't seen any game time got the opportunity to come in and produce and get a little reward for how hard they've worked. A very good day for Syracuse lacrosse."
Â
Stephen Rehfuss led the offense with five points (2-3) and Nate Solomon chipped in four (1-3). Bradley Voigt and Jacob Buttermore also added hat tricks. In total, 11-different players registered point in the victory.
The game also featured the first collegiate goals for Matt Magnan and Justin Kim.
Syracuse will next play its regular-season home finale on Tuesday, April 9, when the team hosts Cornell for Senior Day. Tickets can be purchased on Cuse.com/Tickets, by calling 888-DOME-TIX or by visiting the Carrier Dome Box Office.
