#9 Orange Claim Goes Trophy for the First Time Since 2011
Princeton, N.J. – For the 12th time in program history, the 9th-ranked Syracuse Orange men's rowing team claimed the Goes Trophy when the varsity eight edged Navy by one second. 'Cuse also brings home the Stagg Trophy for the second-consecutive year and back-to-back for the first time since 1998-99.
"We are very excited to have both the Stagg and Goes Trophy coming home to Syracuse," head coach Dave Reischman said. "Those were very tough races to win and our guys had to fight very hard to get out in front of the Navy and Cornell crews. We focused a lot during the week on handling different wind conditions, as it seems that wind/water quality always plays a role in this race. I thought our guys did a great job keeping the focus in our boats and handling the conditions on the race course."
The 4V8+ started the day with a second-place finish crossing the line eight seconds behind Navy.
The 3V8+ earned a victory by nearly four seconds over Navy and had a eight second lead over Cornell to give the Orange the first points of the day towards the Stagg Trophy.
The second varsity eight clinched the Stagg Trophy with a four-second win over Navy and finished seven seconds ahead of Cornell.
In the final race of the day, the varsity eight edged Navy down the stretch for a photo finish to complete the sweep for the Stagg Trophy and secure the Goes Trophy.
THE GOES TROPHY
Clifford "Tip" Goes, Syracuse Class of 1914, created the Goes Trophy in 1955 to honor coaches James Ten Eyck of Syracuse, Charles Courtney of Cornell and Richard Glendon of Navy. The trophy is presented to the winner of the annual race between the schools.
THE STAGG TROPHY
Presented to the team compiling the most overall points in the heavyweight races between Navy, Cornell and Syracuse, the Stagg Trophy is named after Norman G. Stagg, the late Tompkins County judge and former Cornell oarsman.
The Orange return to the water Saturday, April 27, when they race Boston University and Columbia for the Conlan Cup. Boston University won last year's race and five out of the last six. Syracuse last won the Conlan Cup in 2017.
