
Men’s Rowing Faces Huge Test This Weekend

Syracuse, N.Y. - The 9th-ranked Syracuse University men's rowing team travels to Leonia, N.J., on Saturday to race No. 8 Boston University and No. 15 Columbia at Overpeck Park. The Orange have a quick turnaroud heading home to Syracuse to host No 10. Dartmouth at Ten Eyck on Sunday for the Packard Cup. Sunday's race against the Big Green will be the first-ever ACC Network Extra broadcast of men's rowing. Fans unable to attend can watch live on ACCN Extra online or via the WatchESPN App.
Saturday the Orange claim to bring home the Conlan Cup for the second time in three years. In 2017 'Cuse broad a four-year streak of the Terriers winning the Conlan Cup but last year BU took back the cup in a race decided by half a second.
Sunday's race features a highly anticipated race between two top-10 crews. In last year's race, the Orange beat Dartmouth by nearly two seconds to claim its 29th Packard Cup win since it was first contested in 1960.
All three of Syracuse's varsity eights are undefeated this spring winning races over Wisconsin, Cornell and Navy.
About the Conlan Cup
Syracuse and Boston University have been racing for the Conlan Cup every year since 1987 when the trophy was created. The race is named after Bill Conlan who was the founder of the Boston University rowing program. The Orange has won the cup 16 times in 30 years. The Conlan Cup was not contested in 1996.
About the Packard Cup
Anthony Ladd commissioned the Packard Cup in 1959 to honor his father-in-law, Edward N. Packard (SU Class of 1906). The cup, made of sterling silver, is awarded annually to the winner of the Syracuse-Dartmouth race. Packard was the stroke of the 1904 varsity eight, the first SU crew to capture an IRA championship.
