Nick Mellen can add another accolade to his growing list as the redshirt-junior was named one of the 25 nominees for the Tewaaraton Award.
Mellen, who hasn't allowed a goal to his matchup since the calendar flipped to April, is holding his opponents to 0.91 goals per game this season. On the year as a whole, those players average 1.8 goals per game on the year. He's also limiting them to 2.3 points per game, below a combined average of 3.5.
The Syracuse, N.Y. native has done so against some of the nation's best attackmen as well, guarding three of the top-15 and four of the top-20 scorers nationally so far this year.
On top of his shutdown defense, Mellen has caused 14 turnovers and collected 24 ground balls on the season. The 14 caused turnovers brings his career total to 50, ranking him fifth in Syracuse history in the category.
The Tewaaraton Award is recognized as the pre-eminent lacrosse award, annually honoring the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. Of the 25 nominees, five men and five women will be selected as finalists and will be invited to Washington, D.C., for the 18th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony on May 31.
Mellen and the Orange face North Carolina in the ACC Tournament opener on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Chapel Hill. The winner will advance to play top-seed Virginia on Saturday in the semifinals. The game can be viewed on ACC Network Extra.
