ORLANDO, Fla. - The second-winningest competitor in program history has donned orange on the court for the final time.
No. 14 senior Gabriela Knutson's collegiate career came to an end in the opening round of the NCAA Singles Championship Monday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida. She lost in straight sets - 2-6, 2-6 - to Washington's No. 57 Stacey Fung.
"Gabriela has been a tremendous student-athlete at Syracuse University," head coach Younes Limam said. "I am proud of how far she has come, exceeding everyone's expectations on the court and remaining dedicated to her academics all along the way. To cap it all off with another appearance in the NCAA Individual Championship was fitting for one of the best players in the history of our program.
"She's going to do great things in this world, and I know her experience at Syracuse will serve her well in the future."
An All-American in both singles and doubles last year, Knutson earned All-ACC First Team recognition for the second consecutive season after compiling a 15-7 singles record this spring. She went 8-5 against nationally ranked opponents and picked up two victories over top-five opponents, ranking as high as No. 5 in the national singles poll. She departs Syracuse with the second-most overall victories (179) in school history.
As a top-16 seed in this year's NCAA Singles Championship, she also notched All-America status in singles for the second year in a row.
