Sacramento, Calif. – All three of ninth-ranked Syracuse University's varsity eight crews won their respective repechages Friday to earn a spots in Saturday's AB Semifinals at the 117th IRA Championships.
"All three of our boats had a good day of racing," head coach Dave Reischman said. "We did a nice job in the afternoon of building off of our morning races and getting a little bit better. The repechages are always nerve-wracking and, with one to advance in the V and 2V, there is no room for error. All three crews are excited to be racing in the A/B semifinals and the real challenge is to continue to find ways to get a little bit faster each race."
In the first race of the day for the Orange, Syracuse's varsity eight placed third in Heat 1 earning the top seed in Repechage 1 in the afternoon. In the repechage, Syracuse earned a win to advance to the B Semifinal with a three-second win over George Washington. The top two finishers in each rep advance to the AB Semis while the third and fourth place teams move on to the CD Semifinals.
The 2V8+ finished third in Heat 2 to earn a spot in Repechage 2 and would race Wisconsin, FIT and George Washington in the afternoon. The Orange cruised to nearly a five-second victory over the Badgers, advancing to the top semifinal heat at 12 p.m. ET Saturday.
In Heat 3 of the morning, the 3V8+ finished third advancing to Repechage 1. In the afternoon race, Syracuse led the entire time holding off two late challenges by Dartmouth. The Orange crossed in 5:54.212, 0.642 seconds faster than Dartmouth, who finished second. Syracuse will line up with Yale, Harvard, Northeastern, Brown and Wisconsin in the B Semifinal on Saturday.
The top three crews from each of the AB Semifinals advance to the Grand Final on Sunday.
