SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Despite a solid four innings of play, Syracuse could not contain the Florida State offense as the Seminoles put up seven runs in the fifth inning on their way to a 9-1 victory Saturday afternoon. The series concludes tomorrow at 12 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
Prior to the start of the game, Syracuse honored its four seniors, Hannah Dossett, Alicia Hansen, Bryce Holmgren and Logan Paul.
Syracuse (21-30, 8-15 ACC) was led by Neli Casares-Maher who's RBI-single in the fourth inning pulled the Orange within one run. Casares-Maher scored Alicia Hansen, who reached base earlier in the inning on a Florida State throwing error.
Florida State (47-8, 18-5 ACC) had a narrow 2-1 lead entering the top of the fifth before their offense connected on several hard hit balls. The Seminoles opened the inning with a solo home run before drawing back-to-back walks. After scoring two runs on a double and sacrifice fly, Cassidy Davis gave Florida State a 7-1 lead with a two-run home run. The final two runs for the Seminoles would come on an RBI single and Syracuse error.
Alex Acevedo reached first base in the lead off position, on an error by Florida State before a single by Gianna Carideo gave Syracuse two base runners with no outs. Pinch runners, Toni Martin and Logan Paul, moved to second and third on a wild pitch. With one out, Florida State made the play at the plate to tag out the potential run.
Alexa Romero started the game for the Orange allowing nine runs (eight earned) on eight hits with five strikeouts. Romero (13-13) held Florida State to two runs on three hits through the first four innings. Sophie Dandola entered in relief with two outs in the fourth where she gave up just one hit.
