SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The reigning College Hockey America champions are gearing up for next season's title defense.
Rising redshirt senior Lindsay Eastwood, rising senior Logan Hicks and rising junior Kristen Siermachesky will captain the Syracuse women's hockey team in the upcoming 2019-20 season, head coach Paul Flanagan announced.
"We're really excited about our leadership group for next year," Flanagan said. "I know all three are respected and well-liked by their peers, and they've worked hard to earn the distinction to lead our team."
Eastwood, a co-captain on last year's championship squad, will wear the "C," while Hicks and Siermachesky will share alternate captain duties.
A defenseman hailing from Kanata, Ontario, Eastwood is the Orange's most experienced and battle-tested returner entering next year. She led all Syracuse defensemen in goals (9) and ranked third in points (14) one season ago, anchoring the team's back line.
She delivered her first career hat trick against Mercyhurst in the quarterfinal round of the CHA Tournament to send the Orange to the championship.
"With her experience, her overall maturity and everything's she gone through, Lindsay will lend a very good holistic approach as a leader for us," Flanagan said. "Her on-ice acumen speaks for itself, but she's been a good leader for us whether she's wearing the letter or not."
Hicks, a forward from Scottsdale, Arizona, skated in all 38 games for the Orange last season, tallying career highs in points (6) and blocks (32). She scored one goal and carded a career-best five assists on the year, logging her first career multi-point game during the campaign.Â
"Logan's been back-and-forth as a forward and a defenseman in her career," Flanagan said. "She's a player that's been shuffled around playing different roles, but that gives her a unique perspective. It helps her communicate with the coaching staff and reach down through the ranks of our team."
Siermachesky is the group's lone underclassman. The defenseman from New Liskeard, Ontario, finished last season with two goals and one assist, blocking 30 shots while maintaining a spot on the Orange's back line.Â
Her second career goal came against Robert Morris in the CHA Tournament title game, helping Syracuse win its first-ever conference title and punch its ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.
"Kristen's mature beyond her years," Flanagan said. "Since day one, she's had the potential to be a true leader here. She's done a great job in all areas of her collegiate life."
