For the second time in her career, former Syracuse All-American Jenna Caira is headed to the Pan American Games as a part of Team Canada. Caira was one of 15 athletes named to the Team Canada roster Wednesday morning who will compete at Lima 2019 in August.
Â
Caira debuted for Team Canada in 2007 at the Junior Women's World Championships before joining the senior ranks in 2009. She has competed in three World Championships (2010, 2012 and 2014), the 2011 Pan American Games and two Pan American Championships. Caira is an integral part of Canada's pitching staff and helped Team Canada to a bronze medal in the 2018 WBSC World Championships. The Pan American Games will serve as an important tune-up for Team Canada in preparation for the WBSC Americas Softball Qualifier in August as Canada looks to qualify for its fifth Olympic Games.
Â
Caira holds 16 single season and career pitching records for the Orange, including career earned run average, wins and strikeouts. During her four year career at Syracuse (2009-12), she helped the Orange to two consecutive BIG EAST tournament titles and three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. Caira picked up BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year, ECAC Pitcher of the Year and BIG EAST Rookie of the Year honors. Following the conclusion of her career, she served as an assistant coach for two seasons for Syracuse while playing with Team Canada.
Â
Caira also became the first Syracuse player to play in the National Pro Fastpitch league this summer as Team Canada competes as the Canadian Wild of Southern Illinois. Last weekend, Caira threw the first no-hitter of the 2019 season, allowing just one walk in the complete game shutout.
Â
Lima 2019 runs from July 26 to August 11 and will bring together approximately 6,700 athletes from 41 nations of the Americas and feature 62 disciplines in 39 sports. It will be the largest sporting event ever held in Peru. Women's softball takes place August 4 to 10 at Complejo Deportivo Villa Maria del Triunfo.
