Dickinson and Stoner Race for NCAA Title on Thursday
6/5/2019 6:07:00 PM | Track and Field
Paige Stoner and Laura Dickinson will race for a national title on Thursday night, as two of the 24 competitors who will run in the NCAA final of the 10,000-meters.
Stoner enters as one of the favorites for the event, posting the fastest time this season among Thursday night's competitors. Dickinson is coming in off a strong performance at regionals that saw her easily qualify to the event.
The Orange duo joins New Mexico, Oregon, Notre Dame and Colorado in being the only schools to have multiple entrants into the 24-athlete final. The ACC is well represented as well, with nine of the competitors hailing from the league.
Stoner has the fastest time of any runner in the field this season, setting her mark of 32:07.36 at the Stanford Invitational in March. The 'Cuse senior won't shy away from the highly competitive field this weekend having posted the 12th-fastest time in NCAA history and following it up with a school record in the 5k later in the season. Both events featured a mostly professional field, prepping the Pottsville, Pa. native for what's to come.
She's also faced most of the competition. In addition to racing all of the East prelim competitors last time out, she defeated New Mexico's Ednah Kurgat, Washington's Isobel Batt-Doyle, Arkansas' Taylor Werner, Florida State's Militsa Mircheva, Villanova's Caroline Alcorta, Indiana's Margaret Allen and Oregon's Carmela Cardama Baez in that March race at Stanford. She's also raced Weini Kelati of New Mexico in a 5k on the year, meaning she's gone head-to-head with 19 of the 24 runners in the field.
Dickinson, just a sophomore, is coming on at the right time for the Orange. Posting personal-bests in her last-three races, she enters her first career NCAA Championship competition on Thursday night.
The Miramichi, Ontario native has followed nearly the same path as Stoner to this point, minus a 5k at the Payton Jordan Invitational. After starting her outdoor campaign with a 10k at the Stanford Invite, Dickinson raced in the steeplechase at the Virginia Challenge as her lone other regular-season competition. At the ACC Championships, she PRed in both the steeplechase and 5k, taking second and fourth in each event. Stoner came away with the conference title in both races.
It was Dickinson who posted the better prelim time of the two competitors. While both safely made the field with top-12 performances, Dickinson turned in a personal-best time of 33:31.24 to reach Austin.
The event will take place on Thursday at 10:38 p.m. eastern on ESPN2.
