SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse chapter of Uplifting Athletes will hold its seventh annual "Lift for Life" on Thursday, July 18. "Lift for Life" is the signature fundraising event for the Uplifting Athletes nationwide network of college football student-athlete led chapters.
Â
This year's event will take place at 5 p.m. inside Manley Field House and it is open to the public. Parking is free in the Manley North Lot.
Â
Last summer, Syracuse's "Lift for Life" raised more than $8,000 to benefit the rare-disease community.
The mission of Uplifting Athletes is to empower people to take action against rare diseases and inspire the medical community to find cures. Proceeds go to support Uplifting Athletes and its commitment to life skills development, patient-focused programs and rare-disease research.
Similar to last year, the Orange football roster has been divided into eight teams. Teams will compete in a variety of physical challenges with the winner crowned the 2019 "Lift for Life" champion. In addition, there will be a closed bench press competition the following day. Team members will lift 225 pounds as many times as they can. The total number of team repetitions will be divided by the number of participants to determine the average number of reps per team. Supporters are invited to select a team and back that group with a one-time donation or make a per rep contribution based on the estimated team average.
To contribute, visit: https://pledgeit.org/for/syracuse-lift-for-life-2019.
After the event, fans are invited onto the field for selfies and autographs with their favorite Orange players.
Syracuse joined Uplifting Athletes in 2013 to help honor former punter and team captain Rob Long who overcame Anaplastic astrocytoma, a rare form of brain cancer, that caused him to miss the final game of his career. Long is the new executive director for Uplifting Athletes.
Â
In 2018, Long and the Syracuse chapter of Uplifting Athletes were presented with the University's Orange Circle Award for their dedication to volunteerism and serving others. Over the past three years, the Syracuse chapter has raised more than $40,000 to benefit the rare-disease community.
Â
ABOUT UPLIFTING ATHLETES
A nonprofit organization founded in 2007, Uplifting Athletes inspires the rare-disease community with hope through the power of sport. A rare disease is one that affects fewer than 200,000 Americans and consequently lacks financial incentive to make and market new treatments. With a network of university chapters run by current college football student-athletes, Uplifting Athletes has established 30 chapters across the country.
