A former SEC Champion and four-time All-American as a competitor, Reuben McCoy has joined the Syracuse track and field program as an assistant coach.
McCoy, who comes to 'Cuse from the Auburn coaching staff, will assist Associate Head Coach Dave Hegland in working with the Orange's sprinters and hurdlers.
"I would like to thank Head coach Bell and Coach Hegland for this opportunity to be part of the Syracuse track and field program, it's a true honor," McCoy said. "The 'Cuse staff has shown first class hospitality welcoming me into the 'Cuse family. I look forward to working with the entire coaching staff to aid in continuing the rich, winning tradition that makes Syracuse track and field one of the great programs in the ACC and NCAA"
McCoy is the second hire of the summer for Head Coach Brien Bell, following the recent addition of cross country assistant coach Raynee DeGrio.Â
"Reuben comes very highly recommended," Bell said. "As a New Jersey native with a great reputation, we expect him to continue our strong recruiting efforts in the Northeast. I'm very pleased to add Coach McCoy to our staff."Â
"We are very excited to welcome Reuben to Syracuse," Hegland said. "He boasts an outstanding competitive resume, having competed amongst the best in the world. He's also coached very successfully at the SEC and NCAA levels, and has had excellent mentors during his time at Auburn. We look forward to him bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience to immediately help our student-athletes."
The 2008 NCAA runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles at Auburn, McCoy went on to a successful professional career where he was at one time the sixth-fastest man in the world in the 400-meter hurdles.
His five-year professional career boasts multiple appearances in the USATF final of the 400-meter hurdles, and a personal best of 48.37 seconds. A 2005 Pan Am U20 gold medalist, McCoy was inducted into the South New Jersey Sports Hall of Fame in 2017.
Originally from Sicklerville, New Jersey, McCoy also spent time as a delegate of USA Track and Field. He was a voting representative for his home state in 2013.
He transitioned to coaching in 2015, and has since assisted Head Coach Ralph Spry in various roles with the Auburn staff. Â In McCoy's time with the Tigers, Auburn track athletes racked up 12 All-America honors in sprint events alone, including Teray Smith, who competed in the 200-meters at the 2016 Olympics.
McCoy will work with Hegland in an event area where the Orange have seen student-athletes rack up 15 All-America nods, including Jarret Eaton and Freddie Crittenden III. Eaton, the 2012 indoor national champion the 60-meter hurdles and Crittenden, a two-time national runner-up, are both currently ranked in the top-20 of the IAAF world rankings in the 110-meter hurdles.
