SYRACUSE, NY -- Eric Devendorf, who was playing in his squad-leading 18th The Basketball Tournament (TBT) game, had a team-leading 20 points to help top-seeded Boeheim's Army past fifth-seeded Gael Nation, 84-74, in the Syracuse Region Semifinal at SRC Arena.
Devendorf tallied 11 of his points in the second quarter and added five assists and five steals to his total. His baseline jumper during the Elam Ending format gave Boeheim's Army the target score of 84 and the triumph. Andrew White added 14 points, B.J. Johnson had 13 and Darryl Watkins contributed 12 points and seven rebounds. Gael Nation had 20 points from AJ English, 19 from Mike Poole and 17 from Steven Burtt.
ELAM ENDING
Boeheim's Army initiated the Elam Ending by calling a timeout right after the four-minute mark in the fourth quarter. The Army led, 75-67 at that point, which set the game target score at 83. Hakim Warrick scored to extend the lead to 77-67. Gael Nation's Obinna Oleka answered with a basket.
White hit his fourth 3-pointer for Boeheim's Army but Gael Nation stayed in the contest when Poole was fouled shooting a 3-pointer and made all three of his free throws. The Army went inside to Warrick, who was fouled and made two free throws to put the club ahead 82-72 and one point from the target score. After Oleka scored again, Devendorf got free on the baseline for his game-winning jumper.
BOARD WORK
After a slow start, Boeheim's Army took command of the boards. In addition to Watkins' effort, Arinze Onuaku had seven rebounds, while Johnson and White had six each. The Army outscored Gael Nation 17-10 on second-chance points.
A LIFT FROM JOHNSON
B.J. Johnson, who played two seasons at Syracuse before finishing his collegiate career at LaSalle, had six rebounds to go along with his 13 points. His 3-pointer in the second quarter put Boeheim's Army up 30-29 and later in the period he was part of six unanswered points with a layup.
TURNING TURNOVERS INTO POINTS
Boeheim's Army took advantage of 16 Gael Nation turnovers, constructing a 28-11 advantage in points off miscues. Devendorf had five of the Army's 11 steals and Watkins added two thefts.
