SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Orange redshirt sophomore placekicker Andre Szmyt and true sophomore safety Andre Cisco were tabbed first-team preseason All-Americans by the Associated Press on Tuesday, Aug. 20. Syracuse was one of five schools with multiple first-team selections, along with Clemson (3), Alabama (3), Wisconsin (2) and Stanford (2).
Â
A 2018 unanimous All-American and the winner of last year's Lou Groza Award as the country's best kicker, Szmyt has received no less than nine first-team All-America nods this preseason. Cisco has received similar recognition, collecting six preseason first-team All-America citations. Additionally, Cisco was named one of the Top 100 players in college football by Sports Illustrated (No. 43) and one of the Top 40 players in the country by Sporting News (No. 20) earlier this summer.
Â
Szmyt led the FBS in most kicking categories in 2018, including connecting on an ACC-record 30 field goals. He also hit all 61 of his point-after attempts to finish with a Syracuse single-season record 151 points in 13 games. Szmyt's average of 11.6 points per contest led the nation.
Â
Cisco became the second true freshman in NCAA history lead the country in interceptions, tying Boston College's Hamp Cheevers with seven. The ACC's Defensive Rookie of the Year and a Walter Camp Second Team All-American, Cisco set the program record for most passes defended by a true freshman (18) and ranked fourth on the team with 60 tackles (46 solo) a year ago.
Â
Led by fourth-year head coach Dino Babers, Syracuse returns 17 starters from last year's 10-3 squad that finished the season No. 15 in the country. The Orange kick off the 2019 campaign at Liberty on Saturday, Aug. 31 and open their home schedule on Saturday, Sept. 14 versus Clemson.
Â
Season and single-game Syracuse football tickets are on sale now online (Cuse.com/tickets), by phone (888-DOME-TIX) and in person at the Dome Box Office (Gate B) located in the Ensley Athletic Center. Season tickets start at $125.
