Lowell, Mass. – Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Sinck made 11 saves as the Syracuse field hockey team blanked UMass Lowell (1-1), 1-0, on Sunday afternoon. The Orange improve to 2-0 this season and freshman Charlotte de Vries has scored the game-winning goal in each of her first two games for 'Cuse.
"I am pleased with the learning that our freshmen made in the last 24 hours," head coach Ange Bradley said. "We had good growth. Sinck was very poised in critical moments of play. She was very good in goal today."
It was a defensive first half with Sinck tallying five saves on five shots faced. Syracuse had one penalty corner in each quarter but was unable to find the back of the net.
The second half showed more offense out of the gate for the Orange. Syracuse took a game-high four shots in the frame and had two corner opportunities. Sinck made a game-high five shots in the third but both teams entered the final quarter tied 0-0.
De Vries broke the tie on a fast break goal in the 51st minute of play, which gave the Orange a 1-0 lead. Syracuse defense buckled down and fended off four shots by the River Hawks in the final frame.
Sinck earned her second win of the season in goal while de Vries tallied her third goal and second game-winning goal. Six different Orange played a complete game while Laura Graziosi and de Vries took a team-high two shots each.
Syracuse opens the home season Monday, against Lafayette at 6 p.m. on ACC Network Extra. Admission and parking are free for all Syracuse home games and can be watched live online or via the WatchESPN App.
