
Graziosi Nets Game-Winner in Double Overtime

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Laura Graziosi scored in the 71st minute to give the Syracuse University field hockey team its second overtime win of the season. The Orange (3-0) stormed back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Lafayette (1-1) 3-2. Charlotte de Vries and Tess Queen also scored for Syracuse in the win.
Lafayette scored a pair of goals to lead early in the game. Caroline Turnbull scored off a corner to put the Leopards on the board in the fourth minute. Ten minutes later, it was Audrey Sawers who scored on a reverse shot that deflected off Syracuse's Sarah Sinck's glove into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.
De Vries put the Orange on the board in the 27th minute to cut the deficit to one, 2-1. She scored off a rebounded save when Syracuse had one of its three corner opportunities in the quarter. The two teams remained even though halftime for a 2-1 Lafayette lead at the break.
Syracuse had a slight 9-8 advantage in shots in the first half while the teams had an even opportunity on penalty corners with four each.
Syracuse's defense controlled the entire second half, holding the Leopards without a shot through the final 30 minutes of regulation. Queen scored just over four minutes into the second half when de Vries ripped a shot off a corner and connected with the sophomore's stick to tip in the equalizer.
After a back-and-forth battle in the final frame, which included three Syracuse corners and four shots by the Orange, the two teams headed to extra time tied 2-2.
The Orange began the 7-on-7 overtime with a man-up advantage due to Lisa van der Geest recording a yellow card with 1:56 to play in regulation. The five-minute penalty carried into extra time but the Orange were unable to capitalize.
A minute into the second overtime Graziosi came in from the right side and connected on a pass from freshman Hailey Bitters who tallied her first career assist on the game-winner.
The Orange finished the game outshooting Lafayette 18-8 and holding an 11-4 advantage in corners. Sinck followed her 11-save performance from Sunday night with three saves in Monday's win while Lafayette goalkeeper Sarah Park made six saves.
'Cuse hits the road to face Central New York foe Cornell at noon on Saturday, Sept. 7. The Orange return home Friday, Sept. 13 to host Saint Joseph's at J.S. Coyne Stadium. Admission and parking is free for all Syracuse home games.
