AUBURN, Ala. — The Syracuse women's soccer team lost a 2-0 decision to Auburn Thursday night in the first road match of the week. The Orange put up seven shots on the Tigers and saw junior goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx record a career-high 10 saves in the match. 'Cuse returns to the pitch on Sunday at 1 p.m. to face Kent State in Kent, Ohio.
Â
"Honestly I'm really proud of this team. I thought we put Auburn under immense pressure throughout the first 45 minutes," said head coach Nicky Adams . "We did really well at getting into spaces that made us dangerous, but if you don't ultimately put points on the board you're in trouble. Regardless, I'm really excited about the progression of my team and glad we challenged Auburn the way we did."
Â
How it Happened
The match began as a defensive grind for both sides. Syracuse kept the opposing attack out wide for a majority of the opening half, limiting Auburn's forwards to the perimeter of the 18-yard box. Sophomore Meghan Root repeatedly worked her way deep into the attacking third, twice making Tigers goalkeeper Kate Hart stave off scoring chances.Â
Â
The Tigers' first real scoring opportunity of the match came in the 25th minute on a corner kick. The send-in almost led to a low near-post goal, but Proulx made a diving save and the Orange defense buckled down to eliminate any further chances.
Â
Syracuse would continue to press the attack from all angles but a disciplined Auburn back line continued to shut down any build up of play. As the halftime whistle blew, the score was tied 0-0.
Â
Auburn came out hot in the second half, quickly pressuring Syracuse's defenders. The aggressive start paid off as the Tigers took a one-goal lead six minutes in courtesy of Hailey Whitaker, who connected on the shot from the top of the 18-yard box.
Â
The Tigers kept the pressure on and took a 2-0 lead midway through the second half as Bri Folds took a strike from 25-yards out that slipped past Proulx just under the crossbar.
Â
Senior Georgia Allen opened up an opportunity a few minutes later by crashing the right side of the net. With defenders on her heels, Allen played a low ball in but Hart swallowed the chance. Redshirt sophomore Laurel Ness followed up moments later from 20 yards out, but her ball curled too much in the air and landed right of the goal mouth.Â
