SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Syracuse women's soccer team (2-3-0) is set to complete its four-game stretch of road matches on Thursday, Sept. 12, in Queens, N.Y., when the Orange take on St. Johns (1-5-0). Kickoff at Belson Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m. and the match will be available to watch live on ESPN3.
Â
This is the Orange's final week of non-conference matches before opening up ACC play on the road against Pittsburgh on Friday, Sept. 20.
Â
"Our entire goal going into conference play was to be about .500 so we're really looking to regroup and continue to fight," head coach Nicky Adams said. "St. John's will be a tough team but I'm excited. At the end of the day I just want us as a team to collectively fight tooth and nail to do our best job."
Â
LAST TIME OUT
'Cuse is coming off a 1-0 loss at Kent State on Sunday. The Golden Flashes held control of the ball from the opening whistle, with seven of their 16 total shots coming in the first half. The lone goal was scored in the 21st minute by Karly Hellstrom off a throw-in that came from just next to the left corner flag.
Â
Syracuse attempted to set up chances for the next 67 minutes, but Kent State kept the Orange wide and quickly shutdown any buildup that reached the center of the final third. 'Cuse was limited to just five shots in each period and put just four on goal through 90 minutes.
Â
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION
St. John's fell to La Salle on Sunday, dropping its fifth game of the season. Its lone win on the year came against Yale in double overtime back on Aug. 20. The Red Storm have scored just three goals this year with credit going toward redshirt junior Zsani Kajan (two) and freshman Isabelle Aviza (one).
Â
The Red Storm went 9-9-1 (5-3-1 Big East) last year and return its lead scorer in Kajan. Kajan recorded 11 of the teams 25 goals in 2018 and her double-digit season made her the seventh player in St. John's program history to record 10 or more goals in a single season.
Â
SISTER VS. SISTER
Thursday's match will feature a family battle as Syracuse junior Shannon Aviza will take on her younger sister in freshman Isabelle Aviza. Shannon and Isabella are both from Medway, Mass., where they played for Medway High School.
Â
WHAT LIES AHEAD
Following their game against St. John's, the Orange return home to take on Fordham on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the final non-conference matchup of the year. The game is Military Appreciation Night and the match will be streamed lived on ACC Network Extra.
Â
Following Fordham, Syracuse goes back on the road to take on Pittsburgh (Sept. 20) for its first ACC matchup of the season.
