QUEENS, N.Y. — The Syracuse women's soccer team (2-4-0) lost, 1-0, to St. John's (2-5-0) on Thursday in Queens, N.Y. in the final road match of the non-conference portion of the season. The Orange return to action at 1 p.m. on Sunday when Fordham comes to the SU Soccer Stadium for Military Appreciation Night.
Syracuse's game against Fordham will be shown live on ACC Network Extra, but fans can only watch if their cable provider carries the ACC Network. Fans unsure if their provider carries ACCN are strongly encouraged to visit GetACCN.com.
Syracuse kept pace with the Red Storm throughout the match, putting up eight shots to their nine. First-year head coach Nicky Adams applauded her sides' efforts, saying "No matter what was given to us, the ladies kept fighting and giving everything they had."
How it happened
Chances were limited in the opening minutes as neither side put a shot up until the 12th minute of play. Syracuse redshirt sophomore Stephanie deLaforcade and senior Sydney Brackett both forced St. John's' Naya Lipkens to work in the 15th minute as they each put a shot on frame, but the goalkeeper stretched out to stop both chances and keep the score 0-0.
Scoring opened two minutes later in the Red Storm's favor when Michelle Money sent a ball in to Samantha Masur, who buried it past junior goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx, putting St. John's up 1-0. Syracuse would send in just two more shots after that goal before the halftime whistle blew.
The second half was more favorable for the Orange defense as it limited St. John's to just three shots. Syracuse sent up four shots and won four corners but the team's efforts weren't enough to beat the keeper before time expired.
