Singelmann's OT Goal Lifts Orange by Big Red

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Noah Singelmann scored his first career goal in the 97th minute to give the Syracuse men's soccer team a 3-2 victory against Cornell at the SU Soccer Stadium. The Orange trailed twice in the game, but scored the final two goals of the match to record the victory.
Â
"It was a disappointing start against a very good team (but), a great response to it," Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre said. "We came back twice. So the negative part is that we were behind twice to a very good team. The positives are we came back and found a way to win the game. I'm delighted for the guys."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Cornell (2-2-0) jumped out to an early lead, scoring just 1:49 into the match. The Orange (2-1-3) answered 1:27 later when senior Massimo Ferrin scored on a free kick from 25 yards that bounced in front of the goal and into the back of the net.
Â
The Big Red regained the lead in the 19th minute. Harry Fuller served the ball into the box where it deflected off a Syracuse defender to Ryan Bayne. Bayne found the back of the net with his shot to put Cornell back on top, 2-1. The lead lasted until the 34th minute when senior Severin Soerlie netted his first goal of the season on assists from junior Simon Triantafillou and sophomore Ryan Raposo to even things up at 2-2.
Â
The score remained that way until the 97th minute. The play that won the match started with a throw-in in front of the visitor bench by senior John-Austin Ricks to Ferrin. Ferrin flicked the ball to Singelmann, who worked around his defender and put his shot in the left corner of the goal to give Syracuse the win.
Â
OF NOTE
Tuesday's match marked the fourth consecutive overtime match for the Orange. The previous three ended in ties. Since losing its season opener to No. 3 Georgetown, Syracuse is unbeaten in its last five games.

Goalkeeper Christian Miesch made three saves, including one in overtime, to record his first win as a member of the Orange. With his assist on the second goal of the game, Raposo now has a team-high 11 points this season. He also leads the squad in goals (4) and assists (3).

After playing five consecutive home matches, Syracuse goes on the road to face No. 1 Wake Forest on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 7:30 p.m. in Winston-Salem, N.C. The game will be streamed on ACCNX.
