Hamilton, N.Y. – A trio of goals led to the 19th-ranked Syracuse field hockey team securing its sixth win of the season (6-2) with a 3-1 victory at Central New York foe Colgate (2-6) Sunday afternoon. Charlotte de Vries delivered her team-leading eighth and ninth goals of the season and sophomore SJ Quigley netted a goal and a pair of assists in the win.
"Colgate played tough with good structure," said head coach Ange Bradley. "This was a good opportunity for our team to learn resilience and what it takes to come back from defeat. It was a total team effort today and I'm happy for the group that they were able to get a win."
The Orange took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute when de Vries scored on a corner assisted by both Quigley and Laura Graziosi. Syracuse extended its lead to two when de Vries scored for a second time on a penalty corner. Quigley and Graziosi again had assists on the goal.
Syracuse held Colgate to zero shots in the first half while tallying eight of its own. Anna Unger made five saves for the Raiders through the first two periods.
'Cuse added an insurance goal in the 39th minute when Quigley scored her second goal of the season. Claire Cooke was credited with the assist, her second of the season.
Colgate avoided the shutout when Mari Kniezewski scored off a rebounded shot before Syracuse defense could recover with under 10 minutes to play. The Orange held off an aggressive Raiders' squad who had a game-high five shots in the final frame to win 3-1.
Syd Taylor earned her first win of the season in goal making two saves and allowing one goal in 53 minutes of action. Sarah Sinck finished out the final six and a half minutes and did not face a shot.
The Orange dominated the Raiders in every statistical category including shots (21-6) and corners (6-0). Anna Unger made 12 saves in the loss for Colgate allowing three goals in a full 60 minutes of action.
Syracuse improves to 23-10 all-time against Colgate and has won six-straight meetings against the Raiders.
