Durham, N.C. – Head coach Ange Bradley and the 19th-ranked Syracuse field hockey team traveled to Durham, N.C., with one thing in mind; beat Duke. On Friday night, the Orange did just that. Charlotte de Vries scored the game-winner in the 78th minute for a 2-1 win. The Orange improve to 7-2 overall and 1-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference while Duke (7-1) loses its first game of the season and begins ACC play 0-1.
"Our kids hung tough and they were incredibly gritty," said head coach Ange Bradley. "We made some adjustments in the second half and our kids just kept fighting. They were so gritty and tough and that is what Syracuse hockey is. I am very proud of them and my staff on a great week of preparation."
Duke took a 1-0 lead when Haley Schleicher scored a penalty stroke just before the end of the first quarter. The Blue Devils out-shot the Orange 13-1 in the first half and held a 6-0 advantage in penalty corners.
Syracuse's adjustments showed after the break. The Orange edged Duke 4-3 in shots and had a trio of penalty corners while keeping the Blue Devils out of the semi-circle on the opposite side of the field.
Claire Cooke evened the score late in the fourth quarter when she knocked in a deflected shot off one of Syracuse's three corners in the final quarter. The Orange and Blue Devils played a back-and-forth battle in the first overtime period but neither team was able to penetrate the goal line. It wasn't until the 78th minute when de Vries took Sammi Steele one-on-one to score the game-winner.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak against the Blue Devils for Syracuse and marked the first time Steele has allowed multiple goals in a game this season. De Vries' overtime goal was the fourth game-winning goal of her career and her team-leading 10th goal this season.
Sarah Sinck made eight saves in the win. Carolin Hoffmann quarterbacked the Syracuse midfield and added an assist on Cooke's goal, her first helper of the season.
Syracuse continues its four-game road stretch with a pair of west coast games against Cal and No. 15 Stanford in Berkeley, Calif., on Oct. 4 and 5, respectively.
