Ferrin's Early Goal Lifts Orange Past Raiders
9/24/2019 10:19:00 PM | Men's Soccer
HAMILTON, N.Y. – Senior Massimo Ferrin scored in the second minute of play for the only goal the Syracuse men's soccer team would need in a 1-0 victory at Colgate on Tuesday, Sept. 24. The win was the 500th victory in program history.
Â
"To start the game like that was terrific," Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre said. "We know how difficult Colgate is. We know this is a tough place to play. Going into the half we probably should have been up another one or two goals, but we didn't put them away. Credit Colgate – they threw numbers forward (in the second half). We had to defend long throw-ins and direct balls."Â
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The only goal of the game came 1:08 into the action. A Colgate defender misplayed the ball in Syracuse's offensive zone, giving Ferrin a clear path to the goal. He brought the ball into the box and put his shot in the back of the net for his third goal of the season.
Â
The Orange (3-2-3) continued to apply pressure, but couldn't take advantage of its opportunities. Syracuse recorded eight shots to two for Colgate (1-2-4) and held a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks in the first half.
Â
The Raiders were more dangerous in the second half, but the Orange were up to the challenge. Colgate's best scoring chance came in the final seconds as it had two corner kicks as the clock ran down. On the second corner, goalkeeper Jacob Harris, who was stationed in the box to give the Raiders an advantage, got off a header, but it went just wide as time expired.
Â
OF NOTE
Sophomore Christian Miesch made three saves for his second shutout of the season. The win was the first for the Orange on the road in 2019.
Â
Syracuse now has an all-time record of 500-516-121. The first Syracuse team took to the pitch in 1920. No games were played in 1922, 1943-45 and 1951. The program was briefly discontinued between 1961-69 before being reinstated in 1970.
Â
UP NEXT
The Orange return to ACC play on Friday, Sept. 27 when they host Pittsburgh at 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission and parking are free. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
