#6 Seminoles Edge Out Orange

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Syracuse women's soccer (2-6-2, 0-2-1 ACC) ended the weekend with a tough 1-0 loss to defending national champion Florida State (9-2-0, 3-0-0 ACC) at the SU Soccer Stadium on Sunday. The Orange kept the Seminoles' offense at bay for 72 minutes, but a well-placed pass from Yujie Zhao and a bit of finesse by Deyna Castellanos in the final third was all FSU needed to get the win. Syracuse returns to the pitch Friday for a road match against Notre Dame.
Â
"On Friday against Louisville, the lack of energy we had was very disappointing. We didn't have that grit, but I think that's something we had during pretty much the whole game today," head coach Nicky Adams said. "We tried to keep them in front of us and the one time they slipped through is the one time they scored. That was a very patient attacking team that we saw and they're champions for a reason. When the timing's right, they put it away."
Â
Record watch
Junior goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx made eight saves today to bring her career total to 83, making her 82 saves away from seventh places'Â Riley Wogamon '99.
Â
How it happened
The Orange opened with a very high tempo pace of play today as they tried to mix short, quick passes with run-ins up the middle. Their efforts weren't enough though as the Seminoles repeatedly broke down plays and cleared Syracuse scoring chances. 'Cuse registered just two shots on the day, FSU's Brooke Bollinger stopping both.
Â
The game-winning-goal came when Zhao played in a low cross from the top right corner of the 18-yard box that floated to Castellanos. The senior forward then calmly spun and tapped it in past Proulx for the goal.
