SOFTBALL ALUM CAIRA TO REPRESENT ORANGE AT 2020 TOKYO OLYMPIC GAMES
SYRACUSE, NY – Former Syracuse All-American pitcher and 2012 team captain Jenna Caira and Team Canada have qualified to compete in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan next summer.
Surrey, British Columbia hosted the 2019 Americas Olympic Qualifier last week. Canada went into the tournament ranked third in the WBSC World Rankings and punched their ticket to Tokyo by posting a 6-1 record in seven games. Canada finished the qualifier in second place, losing only to first-place Mexico. Caira tossed two perfect innings against Puerto Rico and a one-hit, two strikeout inning against Cuba during Canada's Olympic qualifying run.
This will be Canada's fifth Olympic Games, competing alongside Japan, USA, Italy, and Mexico who have already qualified. The sixth and final team will be decided by the winner of the WBSC Asia/Oceania Qualifier, to be held in Shanghai, China, from Sep. 24-28.
Caira debuted for Team Canada in 2007 at the Junior Women's World Championships before joining the senior ranks in 2009. She has competed in four World Championships (2010, 2012, 2014, and 2018), the 2011 and 2015 Pan American Games - winning gold in 2015 - and three Pan American Championships. She has contributed as an integral part of the pitching staff in her tenure with Team Canada.
Caira holds the record for career earned run average, wins, and strikeouts for the Orange, along with 13 other records. During her four year career at Syracuse (2009-12), she helped the Orange to two consecutive BIG EAST tournament titles and three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. The Toronto native also earned BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year, ECAC Pitcher of the Year, and BIG EAST Rookie of the Year honors. She was the first pitcher in BIG EAST history to reach 1,000 career strikeouts. Following her playing career, she served as an assistant coach for two seasons for Syracuse while playing with Team Canada.
The 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympic Games kick off Jul. 24 and run until the closing ceremonies on Aug. 9.Â
