KENT, Ohio — The Syracuse women's soccer team's (2-3-0) road swing continued Sunday with a 1-0 loss against Kent State (1-3-1) in Kent, Ohio . The Orange took 10 shots on the day and recorded four corners, but couldn't find the back of the net.
Â
Kent State put six of their 10 shots on frame and played a very aggressive style of soccer. Despite the many scoring chances that opened up, junior goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx made five saves and was largely aided by senior defender Taylor Bennett. Bennett cutoff multiple run-ins and setup countless opportunities for Syracuse to go on the counter attack.
Â
"Taylor is one of those tough, strong defenders who sacrifices every time she can," head coach Nicky Adams said. "She's probably our leader in shot blocks, and with Kent State's direct style of play, she had a lot of running to do today.
Â
"Lysianne was pretty solid all day too," Adams added. "She made a few key saves that kept us in the game. Her confidence is definitely growing as the season goes on."
Â
How it Happened
The Golden Flashes held control of the ball from the opening whistle, with seven of their 16 total shots coming in the first half. Six of those shots came in the first 22 minutes. The lone goal was scored in the 21st minute from Karly Hellstrom off a throw-in that came from just next to the left corner flag. Hellstrom received the ball near the left corner of the box and slotted it left of Proulx to put her side up.
Â
Syracuse attempted to set up chances for the next 67 minutes, but Kent State kept the Orange wide and quickly shutdown any buildup that reached the center of the final third. 'Cuse was limited to just five shots in each period and put just four on goal.
"We weren't particularly good today," Adams said. "I think the physicality of the game made us concentrate more on that than on our plan of execution, so I'm very disappointed in that."
