Making An Impact: 'Cuse ACC Network Female-Forward Production
1/10/2020 9:50:00 AM | Women's Basketball, General
The ACC Network Extra (ACCNX) production of the Syracuse women's basketball game against Georgia Tech on Thursday, Jan. 16th will tell an impactful story outside of the game on the court. The production will feature a broadcast team of Syracuse University women graduates and the control room for the game broadcast and pregame and halftime shows will have women in every lead position. ESPN's Beth Mowins G'90 and former Syracuse women's basketball student-athlete Isis Young '18, G'19 will call the game that tips off at 7:30 pm at the Dome. The studio hosts for the pre-game and halftime shows will be Syracuse University students Nicole Weaving '20 and Jenna Fink '21, with Michelle Knezovic G'20 as the feature reporter.
Â
"We want to send a message to young women that if you love sports and you love television, Syracuse is a place where you can practice and you can learn your craft," said Syracuse Director of Athletics John Wildhack. "The ACC Network provides the students hands on experience in live productions, giving them practical experience and a competitive advantage going in the job market."
Â
The intent of this production is to demonstrate to the next generation of women who have an interest in sport and television that the goal is attainable and to empower women currently in the industry to see their female peers in leadership and technical positions.
Â
Syracuse Athletics producer Kristin Hennessey will produce the game broadcast with a control room front bench that includes director Laura Bailey, technical director Ally Heath '20 and associate director Kara Hitt G'20, as well as technical positions including audio technician Summer Stubbmann '23, graphics operator Melissa Thorne, and stage manager Samantha Rothman '20, and statistician Alyssa Lyons G'20.
Â
"This female-forward broadcast will celebrate the women who are in these positions throughout the year and coming together for one production," Hennessey said. "We are shining a light on what these women have accomplished in the sports television industry and setting an example for the next generation. Our goal is that this – having women in leadership roles in production and on-air – becomes the norm."
Â
Syracuse Newhouse Sports Media Director Olivia Stomski '01 will coordinate the pregame and halftime show with producer Mackenzie Pearce '21, director Maria Trivelpiece G'20, associate director Jenna Elique '22, technical director Jillian O'Mitchell '18, and engineer Roxanne Niezabytowski.
Â
"All of the students involved, male and female, are so excited" Stomski said. "We have an opportunity to highlight something that is unique here at Syracuse University. The opportunities that the ACC Network and Newhouse have provided for these students have not gone unnoticed. The students work really hard because they care and want to go into this industry. This is an opportunity for us to highlight and celebrate their hard work and talent in a unique way. This will be a show they remember for the rest of their lives."
Â
The Orange women's basketball team is ranked in the top 30 nationally and in the last week has posted victories against both #8 Florida State and 2018 National Champion Notre Dame in thrilling overtime games.
