
Four Named Preseason All-Americans

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Emily Hawryschuk headlines a group of four Syracuse players named to Inside Lacrosse's preseason All-America list. Hawryschuk and sophomore Sarah Cooper were first-team selections, making the Orange just one of three schools to have multiple first-team picks. In addition, redshirt junior Kerry Defliese earned second-team honors, while sophomore Megan Carney was a honorable mention selection.

Hawryschuk was one of the leading scorers in the nation last season. She scored 75 goals, which ranked ninth in the nation and second on Syracuse's single-season record list. She also finished with 94 points and 19 assists. Hawryschuk earned All-America First Team honors from the IWLCA and was a first-team All-ACC performer in 2019.

Cooper earned the 2019 ACC Rookie of the Year award after leading the Orange in caused turnovers with 33. She also ranked second in ground balls with 36. Cooper started all 21 games on defense and helped Syracuse hold its opponents to less than 10 goals eight times. She was voted to the All-ACC Second Team and was the only freshman on the Tewaaraton Award Watch List.

Defliese was voted to the IWLCA All-Northeast Region First Team in 2019. It marked the second consecutive year she earned the honor. She started all 21 games last season on defense and recorded career highs in ground balls (31) and caused turnovers (27). Defliese ranked sixth in the ACC in caused turnovers per game (1.38) and was selected to the All-ACC Second Team.

Carney made an immediate impact on the Orange in her rookie season. She ranked second on the team in assists (24) and third in goals (32) and points (56). Carney posted a season-high nine points in Syracuse's win against Virginia Tech on four goals and five assists and had five points in each of the Orange's NCAA Tournament games. Last summer, she helped the U.S. win gold at the World Lacrosse Women's U19 Championship.

Syracuse opens the 2020 campaign on Friday, Feb. 7 against Canisius in the Carrier Dome at 7:30 p.m.
