Late Goals Send Saints Past Orange

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A tough out-of-conference matchup against St. Lawrence resulted in the Syracuse ice hockey team registering its first loss, 3-1, of the new year. 'Cuse drops to 5-13-1 on the year while SLU improves to 7-7-5. Sophomore Abby Moloughney scored the lone goal for Syracuse, the helper from senior Amanda Bäckebo . Jessica Poirier, Sophie Holden, and Anna Segedi netted goals for St. Lawrence.
Â
"With almost a full month off it's tough to get back into it," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "I thought we played pretty consistent throughout the game and everyone did a good job. What I like about playing this non-league game before we get into the weekend series with Mercyhurst is that it gave us an opportunity to try some new combinations and see what they could do. All in all, I saw a lot of positives tonight."
Â
How it happened
The Saints came out firing in the opening period, Poirier finding the back of the net just 3:13 into the game after a series of saves by junior Orange keeper Allison Small. St. Lawrence held onto it's lead and entered the first intermission ahead 1-0.
Â
The score stayed stagnant for much of the middle stanza until Moloughney tipped a pass by junior Jessica DiGirolamo past Saints goaltender Jaimie Rainville to tie the game at 1-1 with less than two minutes left to play in the second. The goal was Moloughney's third of the season and the 13th of her career.
Â
Both teams' defense refused to falter through most of the third period until Holden finished low from in front of the crease to give the Saints a 2-1 lead with five minutes to go. An empty-netter by Segedi four minutes later sealed the game for St. Lawrence.
Â
Small recorded 20 saves in 58 minutes of action, while the Saints goalie trifecta of Caitlin Whitehead (11), Rainville (14), and Lucy Morgan (11) combined for 36 saves on the night.
