Syracuse (0-3, 0-3 ACC) hosts #1 North Carolina (4-0, 4-0 ACC) in the home opener for the Orange on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. (EST). The match is available on ACC Network Extra.
SYRACUSE SEEKS INITIAL TRIUMPH OF 2020
Coach Nicky Adams' squad opened the fall schedule with three consecutive road matches. The Orange were handed defeats at ACC rivals Pittsburgh, Louisville and Notre Dame. Syracuse is making its first appearance on its own pitch when it tangles with the Tar Heels.
Senior goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx has guarded the net for every minute of the first three contests. The Orange have received consistent play from senior captains Shannon Aviza, Kailee Coonan and Kate Hostage.
THEY'RE NUMBER ONE
The Orange take on the nation's best for the second time in program history. Syracuse had a 2015 encounter with then-number one Virginia that resulted in a 5-0 defeat.Â
Â
North Carolina's top ranking is not a new place of residence for the Tar Heels. The program has won 21 NCAA Championships, all under the guidance of current coach Anson Dorrance.
The Tar Heels enter Thursday's match having posted a 34-0-3 record in their last 37 regular season ACC contests. North Carolina advanced to the NCAA Championship game a season ago before losing to Stanford in penalty kicks.
"YOU SAY IT'S YOUR BIRTHDAY?"
Senior Mackenzie Vlachos gets the unique opportunity of competing against the number one team in the land on her birthday! The Kingston, Mass. native is the second Orange player to celebrate her birthday this month. Senior Shannon Aviza had her cake and candles on Oct. 5.
NEXT UP FOR THE ORANGE
Syracuse is scheduled to host #5 Duke on Sunday, Oct. 18, at 11:00 a.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. It will mark the first time the Orange have faced top-five foes in back-to-back games since the 2015 campaign. That season, Syracuse squared off with #1 Virginia and #2 North Carolina in consecutive contests.
Syracuse University Athletics remains committed to doing everything it can to support and protect the health, safety and well-being of our student-athletes, our staff and the campus and Syracuse communities. All decisions will be science-based and informed by public health and guidance as provided by county, state and public health officials.
