Â
Five different 'Cuse players recorded multiple hits (Jamie Gregg – 4, Neli Casares-Maher – 3, Rebecca Clyde – 3, Gabby Teran – 2, Jude Padilla – 2). Gregg paced the Orange with three runs-batted in, while Casares-Maher and Acevedo each drove in two.
Â
Kaia Oliver was handed the losing decision, following 6.2 innings in relief of Alexa Romero. The freshman struck out four Rutgers batters and came up with some key outs to keep 'Cuse afloat.
Â
KNIGHTS HOLD ON IN EXTRAS
Rutgers freshman Payton Lincavage was the hero for the Scarlet Knights, singling to score senior Cambria Keefer to break a 10-10 tie in the top of the ninth inning of a back-and-forth affair. Starting pitcher Corah Price re-entered the game for Rutgers and sealed the victory for her squad.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Romero retired the first Rutgers batter of the contest, but after senior Anyssa Iliopoulos worked a walk, sophomore catcher Katie Wingert gave the Scarlet Knights a 2-0 advantage in the top of the first with a home run to centerfield. Romero fanned the next two hitters to limit the damage and get out of the inning.
Â
Syracuse did not wait to respond, pushing two runs across the plate in the bottom half of the frame to even the score. Gregg and Teran each hit singles to start things off and Alexis Kaiser drove in her forth run of the season with a base hit, advancing to second on the throw and moving Teran to third. Acevedo's fly ball to left field was the first out of the inning, but it was deep enough to bring home another run, tying the score at two.
Â
After another walk and an Orange error, Rutgers was threatening once again in the top of the second. With runners on second and third and nobody out, freshman Taylor Fawcett ripped a single down the left field line to bring in both the runners, putting the Scarlet Knights back on top, 4-2. Rutgers' would add another tally in the top of the third with a Gabrielle Callaway solo homer and Syracuse turned to Oliver to relieve Romero in the circle.
Â
Trailing 5-2, it was Teran who began the 'Cuse rally in the third with a single to left. She reached third base on a Kaiser groundout, and Acevedo trimmed the Scarlet Knight advantage to two with her sharp single to the left side. Casares-Maher made the score 5-4 after she found a hole on the left side in the next at-bat to bring in Acevedo.
Â
Rutgers continued to fill up the scoreboard, adding two more runs in the top half of the fourth. Aleah Marrah's double in the right-centerfield gap scored Taylor Fawcett, who advanced to third following a single and a sacrifice bunt. Iliopoulos came up with a base hit of her own to bring Marrah home and the Scarlet Knights were ahead, 7-4, after three and a half innings.
Â
The 'Cuse offense stayed stubborn and strung together four hits to begin the home half of the fourth inning. A double from Paris Woods and a base knock by Gregg each brought in runs, and Rutgers remained in front, 7-6.
Â
The Scarlet Knights gave themselves a more sizable cushion after a 3-run sixth inning. Two straight hits to begin the frame set the table for Iliopoulos to drive in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Wingert smacked her second two-run home run of the afternoon to extend the advantage to 10-6.
Â
The Orange immediately answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to make the score 10-9 headed into the seventh. After Rebecca Clyde's lead-off single, Woods reached on a fielder's choice and Gregg roped a two-run double over the head of the Rutgers left fielder for her second and third RBIs of the day. The Scarlet Knights retired two Orange before Casares-Maher poked one into right field to cut the Rutgers lead to one for the fourth time in the contest.
Â
Clyde smoked her second double of the tilt to deep right field after Lailoni Mayfield walked in her first plate appearance. Mayfield scored, forcing the game into extra innings.
Â
NOTEWORTHY
- Woods' double was her first hit in her Orange career. Padilla recorded her first career multi-hit game with a pair of singles.
