Â
ORANGE UPDATE
Syracuse's upset bid of No. 8/8 Florida State came up just short last Saturday in Tallahassee. A free throw by redshirt junior Elijah Hughes gave the Orange a 73-72 lead with 1:54 remaining, but the Seminoles responded with four straight points to go up 76-73 with 1:14 on the clock. Hughes again brought Syracuse within one, 78-77, with a jumper from the paint with 10 seconds left, but a pair of free throws by Trent Forrest with eight seconds remaining clinched FSU's 80-77 victory.
Â
Hughes returned to the lineup after exiting last Tuesday's game against NC State after just 2:33 with a lower body injury. He was 10-for-20 from the field against the Seminoles and finished with a game-high 25 points. Freshman Joseph Girard III scored 22 points for his third 20-point effort of the season.
Â
ACC TOP SCORERS MEET
Wednesday's game features the top two scorers in the ACC. Hughes moved back into the top spot with his performance at Florida State as he improved his season scoring average to 18.9 points per game. Louisville junior Jordan Nwora is right behind in second place, averaging 18.2 points per game. Both are among the top outside shooters in the league as they average 2.5 3-pointer per game, which rank second in the ACC. Syracuse sophomore Buddy Boeheim leads the league in that category (3.4).
Â
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS
Like Syracuse, Louisville is trying to snap a two-game losing streak. The Cardinals lost at Clemson, 77-62, last Saturday. UofL is 22-3 overall, including 12-2 on its home court. The Cardinals are in second place in the ACC standings with a 12-3 league record.
Â
Nwora is the only Louisville player averaging double digits in scoring for Louisville, which ranks third in the ACC in scoring (74.8 ppg.). Redshirt senior Dwayne Sutton ranks sixth in the ACC in rebounding, grabbing 5.9 per game, and leads the team in steals with 22. Â Â
Â
Chris Mack is in his second season at the helm of the Louisville program. In his first season with the Cardinals, he guided the team to a 20-14 record and a No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Â
SERIES HISTORY
Syracuse and Louisville have met 28 times. The Cardinals have won 18 of those games, however the Orange own a two-game winning streak in the series. Last season, Syracuse defeated Louisville, 69-49, in the Carrier Dome. Hughes led all scorers with 18 points.
